Made famous by history
In January 1949 during the 1848-1849 Revolution and War of
Independence the government and Parliament were temporarily
located in the provincial city of Debrecen because the advancing
Austrian forces were already threatening the capital.
Debrecen temporarily became the capital of Hungary when on
14th April 1849 Lajos Kossuth read out the Declaration of
Independence, which also included a declaration dethroning
the Hapsburg dynasty. It was in Debrecen that Kossuth was
elected and inaugurated governor of the country.
Today there are religious services in the church every weekday,
and on Sundays and on public holidays there are three services
a day. Apart from this the church hosts a number of international
religious festivals and the ceremonial events of the parish.
There are organ concerts and choir concerts held here and
above the prayer room exhibitions are held in the Great Church
Gallery, which can accommodate 120 people.
