The Central Library
With its stock of half a million books the Central Library
of the College is the biggest collection of the Hungarian
Reformed Church. Some of its rarities are unique examples,
not only in Europe but in the whole world. 39 codices were
written on parchment in the 1300s and 1500s. The Library keeps
146 old printed works or incunabula, 114 unique works that
have been preserved in only one copy and some 1,600 rarities
from Hungarian literature before 1700.
The most precious pieces in the collection are the manuscripts
of famous former students, namely Mihály Csokonai Vitéz, János
Arany, Ferenc Kölcsey and Endre Ady. The grateful students
enriched the library of their Alma Mater with valuable books.
The most precious items are the hand-written map sheets of
Germanusz Nikolausz from around 1450-1470. Another significant
work is Péter Méliusz Juhász's first botany of Hungary from
1578, entitled Herbárium.
This is also where the most distinctive Hungarian bookbinding
style evolved at the end of the 17th century.
